Tuck National Security & Innovation Conference Recap

• Unicorns wanted: Talent is the cornerstone of the defense tech ecosystem. Companies need individuals who can address the entire ecosystem — government and private sector. This skillset is especially useful in navigating government acquisitions.

• “Lab-grown” startups are on fire: There is increasing interest in startups and products being spun out of academia and research labs. We’re seeing more opportunities for market-minded leaders to help technical teams commercialize their research in the defense tech space.

• Security is not a feature, it’s the product: If companies want to sell to the government, they must implement secure-by-design principles from the outset. Government buyers demand secure systems, and security must inform product development roadmaps as a core tenet, not as an afterthought. 

• Tech and policy are bedfellows: It’s not just about innovating in tech; founders and investors recognize that policy has to move with technology to drive adoption. Companies need to be thinking about policy advocacy, even at the early stages.
